Your biggest fear and probably when you need it the most, your unit simply won’t turn on. If you hear nothing when the unit should be starting up, the lack of power could be a few things. The usual suspects are a blown fuse that can be replaced or tripped circuit breaker that you can reset. Loose or broken wiring, as well as a faulty thermostat could also result in the unit not responding. If the breaker continues to trip, the unit is having more complicated issues that a service technician should take a look at.
Maybe your unit is doing the bare minimum but you know it has more potential… Your first step is going to be checking the air filter and seeing if it needs replacing because of dirt build up. If you’re troubleshooting a commercial unit, check the belt for the blower.
The condenser is a coil on your outdoor unit that has the important job of releasing discharged heat to the outside of the building. Double check the area around your outside unit to make sure no dirt or foliage are making your unit work harder.
A common source of noise is the fan motors that can be blocked by dirt or buildup, also a loose belt. Your best bet is to shut off the unit and consult with a technician.
Lack of air flow is going to cause units to form ice. On commercial units, check the air filter and blower belt. If problems continue, consult a technician.
Check the outlet of condensate line, it may be clogged. Use a wet/dry vacuum to clean the drain.
Check the air filter to see if it is clean, replace if not. Take a look at the the condensing coil on the outdoor unit to make sure the area is clean and clear. If the problem resumes, call a technician to further diagnose.
