The Imfeld family emigrated from Lungren, Switzerland to New Orleans with 11 of their 12 children. Father, Bill Imfeld, found work in Modesto as an appliance dealer. After being denied a $0.50/hour raise, Bill walked out the door and decided to begin his own business.
Bill Imfeld, his wife Margaret, and business partner Paul Cloutier form Imfeld Cloutier (I.C.) Refrigeration which focused on dairy refrigeration and mechanical operations. Paul would only remain with the company for 2 years before moving out of town and leaving the new business in the hands of Bill, Margaret, and new baby son Dick; all with WWII looming over their shoulders. Fortunately, refrigeration was an essential service locally and IC continued to grow as a business.
IC relocated to the high action side of Downtown Modesto, South 9th street! Business continued through and in June of 1956, Margaret, Wife and Mother, passed away at the age of 38. Bill stepped up to the plate of running the business with trusted employees, Al Luke, and Gus Karros. After some time, Bill decided to go full force in the direction of air conditioning and sold the store fixture portion to Gus who later consolidated with Major Sysco. IC continued into the decade establishing themselves as a primary Residential Heating and Air Conditioning Company in the area. The company had now entered both the Sheet Metal and Plumbers Union with 10 permanent employees and 30 on disposal.
Dick has now returned from school and begins integrating himself into the business. After two years of working different roles in the company, Father, Bill falls ill and is hospitalized from a collapsed lung in 1963. At this point, Dick steps in to assume full control of the company for the next 20 years.
The time had come to renew the Union contract and IC, along with three other shops, refused to sign the renewal unless their terms of a residential rate to keep them competitive were met. In the end, IC withdrew from the Union and were returned with a notice that the Union was suing them. The case was handed over to the Federal Government National Labor Relations Board who ruled 2-1 in favor of IC to withdraw from the Sheet Metal Union in 1972.
Rich joins the IC team as a 3rd generation and the business continues to grow and eventually specializing in more commercial HVAC while beginning design/build work for more businesses and less residential contracting, aside from luxury homes and unit changeouts.
As the years passed, the focus was set on being a Mechanical Contracting Company for commercial buildings and this brought a demand for quality, skilled workers. After a hiring spree from Norquist Sheet Metal in North Modesto, top salesman Craig Top joined the team bringing along his pal Kevin Silva.
Kevin began working in the field and one day while taking a lunch break on a job-site, he was talking with a plumber Jesse Rogers, who owned Thrifty Plumbing and discovered that Don Baker, of Baker Construction, was looking for a company to do numerous work and projects for McDonald’s in Northern California. Kevin took Don Baker up on his challenge and started doing night work in McDonald’s to convert the kitchen layout to a more efficient system of keeping the food warm. That job led to handling new kitchen installations for McDonalds throughout Northern California with the first location located in Livingston, California for Owner/Operator Dennis Grasspointer. Continued work for McDonald’s helped IC create a Specialty Sheet Metals Department, now called Restaurant Division. This department of now 15 employees became a pivotal building block that now encompasses ½ of IC’s total business.
In March of 2008 Shirley retired after 26 years with IC Refrigeration, leaving Tracey Buck to carry on the torch.
Coming out of one of the worst recessions in many years, Kevin decides to add to the diversity of the company by creating the Fire Protection Department. IC Refrigeration’s service offerings would be expanded to include: Commercial quarterly hood cleanings, fire sprinklers, fire extinguishers, and fixed fire systems for restaurants. By the end of 2020, this department would grow to 16 employees servicing over 900 locations throughout Northern California. This department currently has 24 employees and services over 1,000 locations.
Rich became president of IC in 2012 where he would remain in that position for the next 6 years. During this time the Sheet Metal Shop would be expanded an additional 1500 sq. ft. to accommodate additional machinery as well as a developed parking lot across the street as a receiving station for incoming freight. In October of ‘18, Rich announced he was selling his shares of the company to Kevin Silva, desiring to no longer work at IC Refrigeration.
In January of 2019 the sale was completed from Rich’s portion of the company and a new management team was formed under Kevin Silva to lead the company in its growth, which included the addition of a 5000 sqft warehouse that would be completed November 2020.
January of 2020 IC added a Powder Coating and Bead Blasting department that would further connect our manufacturing process with our in house operations.
On April 1st 2022, Dick Imfeld retires and sells the rest of his shares to Kevin Silva, making Kevin the sole owner of IC Refrigeration.
IC presses on to continue growing our departments and services offered.
